Progress isn’t always about forward motion

Feeling a little stuck? Like you’re wading through waist-deep mud? Like you’re NOT making progress?

It’s important to remember that progress isn’t always about pushing forward. Sometimes holding position is still making progress. You have to pause and create space to notice how far you’ve come.

The leaders I see thriving as people AND moving forward with intention aren’t just chasing the next goal. They’ve learned something many people ignore: that without deliberately looking back, we lose sight of our own growth.

These people build simple rituals of reflection into their weeks, months, and quarters. Not elaborate systems or time-consuming processes, just consistent moments to pause, breathe and take stock.

Structured reflection moments create spaces to check in with ourselves, recognise progress that would otherwise go unnoticed, refocus on our next horizon, and recalibrate the mindsets and behaviours that will get us there.

Some call it a Friday 30 minute ‘Meeting with Myself’. Others block an hour at month’s end. One CEO I know takes a quarterly “Progress Walk” where they walk along the beach while mentally walking through their wins and lessons.

What matters isn’t the format. What matters is the practice.

Here’s what I know about we humans: we’re remarkably good at noticing what’s not working, what’s still broken, what needs fixing. We’re less skilled at seeing what’s actually shifting, growing, and taking shape.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

  • What’s one reflection ritual you rely on to track your progress?
  • Or if you don’t have one yet, what’s one small way you could start?

Without reflection, progress goes unnoticed and momentum feels elusive. With it, growth becomes visible, intentional, and sustained.
