“Don’t let who you’re being, get in the way of who you could become.”
This little mantra has been guiding my personal and professional evolution for just over a decade. The words arrived one morning onto the pages of my journal and have been a daily companion ever since, through all the challenges and opportunities the weeks, months, and years have brought with them.
Fourteen little words that say so much. For me they speak to three key themes critical to life and leadership – possibly no more so than when we’re in the messy middle of it all.
CONTINOUS GROWTH & RENEWAL
Both life and leadership are an on-going, regenerative process, always offering opportunities for new learning, unlearning, and transformation.
This mantra invites us to recognise the current habits, mindsets, and comfort zones that can become barriers to deeper growth or fresh potential.
IDENTITY & FUTURE READINESS
You’re not fixed and neither is your leadership. Who you are today doesn’t define the limits of your future potential and impact, especially as you navigate pivotal career stages, life changes, and leadership challenges.
This mantra invites us to consider the possibilities that can open up when old identities are shed and roles are examined, loosened, and reframed.
INVITATION TO AGENCY
You are a powerful creator of our own experience. In every moment, you have the opportunity to take active responsibility for who you’re being and the impact you’re having.
This mantra invites us to step beyond present assumptions, practices, and limits including our own ‘success formulas’ and standards, creating a space where new possibilities can emerge.
Overall, it acts as a call to pay attention.
A mirror to look into and take stock.
A blue sky to look up into and wonder.
And a cross-roads in any given moment for us to make a choice.
Stay the same.
Or evolve.
PS: If you’re feeling the tension of ‘becoming’, how about starting by rediscovering yourself? That’s the focus of the Kick Off Retreat of our Turning Point Leadership programme, happening in February next year. Learn more here. Applications close Friday 28 November 2025.
